Location & Climate

Halong Bay is located in the Northeast of vietnam, belonging to Ha Long city, Quang Ninh Province, in the Gulf of Tonkin. On the world map, it has borders to China in the North and adjacent to the East Sea in the East .

The Bay has a medium size of 1,553 square kilometers. It is accomodation of many fishing communities, including the 4 communes of Cua Van, Cong Tau, Vong Vieng and Ba Hang with a population of more than 1,600 people. The residents live on floating houses and boats, making their own lives by fishing and aquaculture.

The bay is a sea islands in tropical wet with 2 seasons: hot and moist summer, dry and cold winter. Average temperature is from 15°C- 25°C. Annual rainfall is between 2,000mm and 2,200mm. Halong Bay has the typical diurnal tide system (tide amplitude ranges from 3.5-4m). The salinity is from 31 to 34.5MT in dry season and lower in rainy season.

Historical name

Literally, “Ha Long” means “Bay of Descending Dragons.” Before the 19th century, this name was not recorded in any document or archive. In this term, there is a mysteriously legendary tale as follows
“Long ago, in the first founding days, the Viet people were attacked by foreign aggressors. The Jade Emperor sent the Mother Dragon and her band of Child Dragons to help the Viet people fight the invaders. While the enemy vessels were launching massive attacks against the mainland, the dragons descended in flocks from the sky. They spat out innumerable pearls which changed into jade stone islands the moment they touched the water. These islands linked together to form firm citadels that checked the enemy’s advance and smashed their vessels to pieces. After the invaders were driven out, Mother Dragon and her Child Dragons did not return to Heaven but stayed on earth, right at the place where the battle occurred. The spot where the Mother Dragon landed was Ha Long, and where the Child Dragons came down was Bai Tu Long. The place where their tails violently wagged was called Long Vi, the today’s Tra Co Peninsula with its soft sandy beach stretching a series of kilometers.”

Gifted Beauty & top sightseeings

Explore vietnam places to visit with Rough Guides: find out when to go, view itineraries and read about lakes, bays, street food and water puppets. In 1962, the Ministry of Culture and Information classified Halong Bay as a National Landscape Site, covering an area of 1,553 km2 with 1,969 islands. Halong Bay has been recognized twice by UNESCO as a World Heritage Area for its universal values of landscape, geology and geomorphology, respectively in 1994 and 2000, an area of 434 sq. km. including 775 islands.

The dense cluster of 1,969 limestone monolithic islands within the bay is topped with thick jungle vegetation, which rise spectacularly from the ocean. Most of the islands were formed over 500 million years ago, and massed in the Southeast and Southwest. Those in the Southeast have an average height of 50-200m, covering lots of flora. Several of the islands are hollow, with enormous caves. Hang Đầu Gỗ (Wooden stakes Cave) is the largest grotto in the Ha Long area. French tourists visited in the late 19th century, and named the cave Grotte des Merveilles. Its three large chambers contain large numerous stalactites and stalagmites (as well as 19thcentury French graffiti). There are two bigger islands, Tuan Chau and Catba, that have permanent inhabitants. Both of them have tourist facilities, including hotels and beaches. There are a number of wonderful beaches on the smaller islands. The others are Bai Chay, Ti Top, Minh Chau, Quan Lan and so forth.

Viewed from above, Ha Long Bay looks like an extremely vivid huge drawing, and sailing beneath the bay is like leisuring in between a huge valey on water. Ha Long bay is exactly a wonderfully skillful masterpiece of Nature that turns thousands of dumb soulless stone islands into fantastic sculptural and artistic works of various graceful shapes, both familiar and strange to human beings. Thousands of islands emerging in the fanciful waves look strong and magnificent but also mild and vivid. Amidst these islands tourists may feel as if they were astrayed in a petrified legendary world. The names given to the islands were based on their shapes and forms, such as, Human head Island, Sail island, Fighting cocks islands… Inside the stone islands are various breath-taking caves like Thien Cung, Dau Go, Sung Sot, and others. These are really magnificent palace of many huge stalactites hanging poised in mid air and stalagmites growing majestically upwards. Ha Long’s sea is always the same, blue, smooth and still.

What is more, the bay has its own seasoned beauty. In Spring, buds of trees burst on limestone islands. In Summer, it is cool and clean with many sparkling sun rays reflecting from the sea’s surface. In Autumn, especially at night, moonlight illuminates the mountains, making them like gold, inlaid into the earth. In Winter, with pervasive frost, Ha Long is glamorous as “a floating flower basket on smooth wave” (by writer Nguyen Tuan). All of them, stone, water and sky, make the Aesthetic value of Halong Bay.

The Bay’s Geological value is evaluated in two ways: by the history of its formation and its karst geomorphology. It is also home to the ancient Viet people beginning from 7,000 to 18,000 years ago, Ha Long’s Cultural − Historical value. Besides, Bio-diversity is an important natural resource, to be well-conserved so as to maintain the ecological balance of the whole region.

Halong Bay is undoubtedly not only a national but also a world nature, a magnificient work of Natural Creator. People who are admirers of natural beauty should stand up, pack their luggages, and right away pick up a flight to Ha Long, or else they will soon feel regretful!

Halong bay tour Information

Halong Bay is definitely a must-see destination in Northern Vietnam. The best way to enjoy its natural and magnificent beauty is to join a cruise for one day or more if time allows. Most travel agencies in Vietnam provides Halong bay tours that depart from Hanoi city for tourists.

Daytrip to Doc Let Beach

Top vietnam things to do, plus suggested routes. Travel tips and advice for backpackers and independent travelers.

Fifty kilometres north of Nha Trang lies Doc Let, a quiet eden of palm-fringed, powdery white sand, sparkling azure waters and a sleepy disposition. Despite its resounding beauty, relatively few people venture here and the beach still feels low-key, natural and wild. If you don’t have the time to stay here (and you really should), then it is well worth doing it as a daytrip. Hire a car, rent a motorbike or take the cheap air-conditioned public bus that drops you right at the beach.

Rush hour on Doc Let.

Doc Let Beach – sometimes spelled Doc Lech, and actually pronounced “yop lek” – is an idyllic stretch of coast ended by a rather unsightly Hyundai shipping port. There are only a few places to stay on Doc Let and they are spread out. We suggest heading to the beaches in front of the resorts to enjoy the patch of rubbish-free sand.

Sunrise at Paradise Resort. Hotels take care to remove rubbish from their patch of sand daily.

How to get to Doc Let
On your own wheels from Nha Trang, the most direct way is to head north on National Route 1 (Quoc lo 1, or abbreviated as QL 1) to Ninh Hoa, approximately 38 kilometres from the city centre. (Random fact: popular Vietnamese dish nem nuong, grilled pork wrapped in rice paper, originated from Ninh Hoa). Head east on QL 26B to get to the very isolated southern end (Ninh Tinh village, Jungle Beach). Veer right onto DT652B/TL 1 which will take you to Doc Let, where there is more local civilisation and activity. Either spot you choose, prepare to laze away the day.

From the tourist centre, on Nguyen Thien Thuat Street take the blue-white-yellow air-conditioned bus #3 (Nha Trang – Ninh Hoa – Doc Let). Bus starts at 06:30, costs 24,000 VND per ride, and last stop is at the beach beside White Sand Doclet Resort & Spa. The ride takes about 1.5 hours one way. Last bus departs at 17:30 sharp. For a one-way journey, we were quoted 500,000 VND for a taxi. If you want roundtrip, having the driver stay for the whole day and/or drive you to different spots, you’ll have to negotiate accordingly.

The #3 bus to Doc Let is a budget traveller’s friend.

Enjoying the beach
You can park your bum anywhere on the beach for free, or White Sand Doclet Resort & Spa has a well set up day guest area with rentals: admission 35,000 VND, locker 15,000 VND, hammock or sun bed 25,000 VND, beach tent 150,000 VND or picnic “cottage” with table and loungers 170,000 VND. Facilities include toilets and showers.

Rent a picnic hut at White Sand Resort & Spa.

If you have your own transport, we highly recommend heading to Paradise Resort. Not only is the swimming here idyllic and sigh-worthy, the view to the hills, archipelago and fishing boats are equally stunning. In this area you can also walk around small Dong Hai village to explore the local scene. The 89-year-young amiably eccentric owner of Paradise Resort invites daytrippers to have lunch at the resort for only 150,000 VND per person. The lunch is tasty and filling, with coffee, tea and vodka included – and all tables have a bottle included in the tray of condiments. To get there, follow the signs to its neighbour Some Days of Silence Resort.

The beach at Paradise Resort, which lives up to its name.

Nineteen kilometres south of Paradise Resort along the coast, about a 30-minute drive from Doc Let, vietnam is Ninh Tinh village, home to Jungle Beach and its chilled out, jungle-y, ultra rustic accommodation. If you’re visiting for the day, you can relax in a hammock, gather others for a game of volleyball or just do nothing. While their website says “Pay for what you eat, Pay for what you drink, Enjoy the rest for free!!” there was a complaint online about an entry fee. It seems it could change on a whim. You’ll either love or hate Jungle Beach. Those who love it end up staying here for longer than anticipated… If you want to linger for the whole day or stay for their beach bonfire and barbecue, it’s best to go by taxi round trip than drive a motorbike in the dark. They can call a taxi for you but since you are miles from anything and the closest village is far away, it will cost you.

Welcome to the jungle.

How to visit Halong Bay

Explore vietnam places to visit with Rough Guides: find out when to go, view itineraries and read about lakes, bays, street food and water puppets. Since being designated a World Heritage site in 1994, much has been made of Halong Bay’s mystical landscape of limestone islets.

As the number-one tourist attraction in the northeast, Halong Bay attracts visitors year-round. UNESCO reports that the numbers of visitors have climbed from 200,000 in 1995 to 1,7000,000 in 2002. There are many ways to experience the ethereal beauty of Halong Bay. Unless you have a private yacht (or you’re an Olympic kayaker), you’ll have to take a tour of some kind.

Cruising the karsts: picking the right tour for you

For a serious splurge, cruising the karsts aboard a luxury Chinese-style junk is hard to beat. There’s also a very luxurious paddle ship, based on a French craft from the early 20th century. But be aware that nearly all of these luxury trips operate on a fixed itinerary, taking in the well-known caves and islands, and simply do not have the time to stray far from Halong City. Many ‘two-day’ tours actually involve less than 24 hours on a boat (and cost hundreds of dollars per person).

At the other end of the scale, budget tours sold out of Hanoi start from a rock-bottom US$35 per person for a dodgy day trip, and rise to around US$150 for two nights on the bay with kayaking. For around US$80 to US$90, you should get a worthwhile overnight cruise.

There are many complaints about poor service, bad food and rats running around boats, but these tend to be on the ultra budget tours. Spend a little more and enjoy the experience a whole lot more. It can be false economy signing up for one of the budget tours, and it’s also potentially a matter of safety.

In February 2011, a budget boat tour sank near Dao Titop with the loss of 11 international tourists from eight countries and one Vietnamese tour guide. In May 2011, the provincial government of the area around Halong Bay enacted new regulations on working conditions and boat safety.

A thrillseeker’s guide to vietnam Beyond Halong Bay: the less-known sights of northeast VietnamWhere to go in February 2011

Most tours include transport and meals, and sometimes include island hikes. Drinks are extra. Most of these trips follow a strict itinerary, with planned stops at illuminated caves often at the same time as many of the other boats operating out of Bai Chay. Because of weather, boat tours are sometimes cancelled and you’ll probably be offered a full or partial refund. Ascertain in advance what that will be.

When to go

February to April is often cool and drizzly, and the ensuing fog can make visibility low, but also adds an ethereal air. From May to September tropical storms are frequent, and year-round, tourist boats sometimes need to alter their itineraries, depending on the weather. Some tour companies offer full or partial refunds if tours are cancelled; check when you book.
